Discover the Hidden Charm of Krnica: A Tranquil Istrian Village

Ā

Nestled in the heart of Istria, Krnica is a picturesque village that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills, and pristine beaches, this charming destination is perfect for travelers seeking peace, authentic local culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. Whether you're exploring its historic streets, savoring traditional Istrian cuisine, or simply soaking in the tranquil ambiance, Krnica promises an unforgettable experience.

KRNICA AND KRNIČKI PORAT (Krnica's Port)

Krnica is situated on an elevation above the sea, surrounded by beautiful forests, pastures, and vineyards. The area was inhabited during prehistoric and Roman times. In the Roman era, the Via Flanatica road, which connected Pula to Liburnia, passed through here. Nearby, the Romans built several structures, including a fort whose primary purpose was to oversee the road. After various epidemics in the 16th century, the area was settled by people fleeing Dalmatia, specifically the Zadar region, naming it Sveta Marija Krnička, later shortened to Krnica. Krnica’s port, locally known as Krnički Porat, serves as its coastal extension.

In Krnica, the standout landmark is the beautiful parish church of St. Rok, built in 1631, featuring Baroque elements. This is an ideal place for relaxation: in spring, you can pick wild asparagus, aromatic and medicinal herbs, and in autumn, gather mushrooms, harvest grapes and olives, enjoy the landscapes, or simply walk and cycle while discovering small ponds with dragonflies.

Krnički Porat, or Krnica’s Port, is a coastal bay below Krnica, deeply embedded in the mainland and well-protected from southern and northern winds. It is also a small fishing village with wooden boats, fishing nets, and stone houses. At sunrise, you can greet fishing boats surrounded by flocks of seagulls and buy freshly caught fish.

An asphalt road through a pine forest connects Krnica to its port (2.5 km). During the 20th century, it served as the sea access point for Krnica and the surrounding villages, as well as their connection to the world. In the past, it housed a station for Austro-Hungarian gendarmes and later Italian financial guards during the Kingdom of Italy. Merchant ships from across the northern Adriatic used to dock here, seeking safe harbor and trading goods and catches.

Today, Krnički Porat is home to fishing boats and small vessels, and in summer, it welcomes tourist boats. It is a popular summer destination and swimming spot for nearby villages. Stunning rocky beaches are located on the northern part of the coast, accessible via a short walk along a white path. At the end of the path, you’ll find a few small houses, a pebble beach, benches, and shaded areas for early visitors. The biodiversity of the marine world is worth exploring, starting with a marked snorkeling site and letting the magic take you further. Krnica and Krnički Porat offer a wide range of outdoor activities, from organized boat trips and diving to renting SUP boards, kayaks, and bicycles for active exploration of the destination.
